A Singular Case of Monomania

become his own. According to Broussais, every man was under the influence of the idee fixe, and, by his first question to the patient, he was invariably determined as to the direction in which it lay. "Are you feverish?" would he say to the sick man who came to consult him. " Very," was most frequently the reply. " Restless, hey??fidgetty at night, hey ??tormented and uneasy, hey ?" To all this the patient would, of course, assent. " Then, monsieur, you have surely got some idee fixe! Ah ! prenez garde a V idee fixe!" It is a curious fact that, however strongly the supposition was denied at first, Broussais seldom failed to elicit something like an avowal of some pet anxiety or other, which by its nature he pretended to trace either to the brain, the stomach, or the bowels. Monsieur A , the patient who has just died at Beaujon a martyr to the idee fixe, was -formerly an employe in the Tuilcries under Charles the Tenth, and held a post of high trust and confidence. In July, 1830, when the mob entered the palace, so great was the respect and consideration in which he

Eigenfunction expansion in the singular case for q-Sturm-Liouville operators
In this work, we prove the existence of a spectral function for singular q-Sturm-Liouville operator. Further, we establish a Parseval equality and expansion formula in eigenfunctions by terms of the spectral function.
متن کاملDetecting the location of the boundary layers in singular perturbation problems with general linear non-local boundary conditions
Singular perturbation problems have been studied by many mathematicians. Since the approximate solutions of these problems are as the sum of internal solution (boundary layer area) and external ones, the formation or non-formation of boundary layers should be specified. This paper, investigates this issue for a singular perturbation problem including a first order differential equation with gen...
متن کاملSir G. Stephen on the Plea of Monomania
We give the following sketch from Sir George Stephen's " Juryman's Guide," as illustrative of the opinion of an intelligent jurist on the plea of monomania in criminal cases. " All criminality depends 011 intention, or on a carelessness which amounts to gross negligence: thus, in the case of shooting a man, the absence of intention to kill will relieve the charge from the guilt of murder; but y...
متن کاملSimulation of Singular Fourth- Order Partial Differential Equations Using the Fourier Transform Combined With Variational Iteration Method
In this paper, we present a comparative study between the modified variational iteration method (MVIM) and a hybrid of Fourier transform and variational iteration method (FTVIM). The study outlines the efficiencyand convergence of the two methods. The analysis is illustrated by investigating four singular partial differential equations with variable coefficients. The solution of singular partia...
متن کاملGeneralized Helices and Singular Points
In this paper, we define X-slant helix in Euclidean 3-space and we obtain helix, slant helix, clad and g-clad helix as special case of the X-slant helix. Then we study Darboux, tangential darboux developable surfaces and their singular points. Especially we show that the striction lines of these surfaces are singular locus of the surfaces.
